All Tangled Up...and More Free than Ever!

image
We are in LOVE with this picture from Day 1 of the KINKY N' FREE pilot! Today, we met the girls at Roots the Salon. Shout out to Brandon for coming in to support us on his day off!
The experience of just beginning has me floating! We had such a great time from the Little Caesar's and salad, to discussing the girls' hopes for the program, to just enjoying one another's company.
The picture above is from one of our team-building activities. Anyone who knows the teacher side of me knows I love a good round or two of the Human Knot, and today was no exception. For those who have never played, it goes like this: form a circle of 10 or fewer (any more than 10 and you face an hours worth of work, possible frustration, and uncomfortable wondering about the brand of deodorant your teammates chose). Next, everyone puts their hands in the circle and grabs the hand of someone across from them; you may not grab the hand of the person next to you and you should not have both of the same person's hands. The goal is to work as a team to "unknot" yourselves without letting go of hands until everyone is standing in a circle again. There are few things that bring a group together like getting all tangled up and working together to get free. There are few metaphors for our program that are as good as or better than this one. We plan to get entwined with the girls in order to deliver honest messages and information to keep them looking and feeling fly inside and out.
When Jaz and I debriefed this evening, there was this sense of, "Dude, did we just do that for real?" After months of planning and praying, our dreams and plans leapt from our shared Google Docs into the lives of the girls in the pilot. The evening truly went by in a blur of dialogue and love. This is real. This is the beginning. I can't wait for all that is to come!
